Objective
The objective of the Atikokan Employment Centre is to provide employment related services to unemployed and underemployed individuals, to provide a central location for accessing federal government forms and to assist individuals make applications to HR+SDC funded programs.

Employment Related Services
Guidance and counseling on all aspects of the employment search

Access to information and resources including job kiosks and advertisements, computer access to Internet, resume and covering letter writing programs, and various printed material including books, pamphlets, news clippings, resource guides and magazines

Assistance to the employer with human resource systems including hiring, training, occupational health & safety, orientation, government reporting, etc

Maintain partnerships with various groups and organizations within the area that provide assistance to any person unemployed or underemployed, i.e. T.W.S., N.C.D.S., etc.

Employment Insurance
Make Service Canada's Employment Insurance Program brochures, forms and printed material available

Provide telephone access to the Service CanadaTelecentre for Employment Insurance inquiries

Government Forms & Printed Materials
Make employment related documents and forms printed by the federal government readily available.

HRDC for Students
The Human Resource Centre for students is an integral part of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.

Comprehensive job postings

Career planning sessions

Assistance in developing resumes and covering letters

Services to Employers
Information on government subsidized programs to enable the hiring of a student

Information on wage rates, employment standards and human rights

Provide listings of potential employees for summer positions

Provide great visibility for vacant job postings
 
Program Objectives
To assist individuals to prepare for, obtain and maintain employment

To help individuals obtain the skills necessary for employment ranging from basic to advanced skills by providing them with direct financial assistance to enable them to select, arrange and pay for their own training.

Who can Participate
Eligible participants are those who according to the Employment Insurance Act, are unemployed individuals:

For whom an unemployed benefit period has been established or has ended within the 36 months prior to the date or requesting assistance; or

For whom a benefit period that included maternity or parental claim has been established within the 60 months prior to the date of requesting assistance, after which the individual remained out of the labour market in order to care for a newborn or newly adopted child and is now seeking to re-enter the labour force.

Other criteria may apply.

Duration
Agreements are generally for up to 52 weeks; sequential agreements may be approved for a total period of up to three years.

Financial Parameters
(if approved for training by HR+SDC, and based on Local Income Support Plan)
Individuals currently on an active employment insurance claim may continue to receive their regular EI benefits until the end of their benefit period

Funding may be provided to cover all or a portion of the cost of tuition of a course or program of instruction, books, dependant care, living allowance, and transportation costs, disability expenses and other course related expenses

Assistance is negotiated on an individual basis with a program official, may be provided to cover all or part of incremental costs due to participation in a course of instruction

Funding provided by HR+SDC is taxable

Training must be applied for and approved before course start in order to receive financial benefit.
